Review of Leadville, a novel by James D. Best
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOOK REVIEW:
By C. K. Crigger
In a new tale starring New York shopkeeper, Steve Dancy, this plenty tough Easterner is soon involved in helping out his friend, a Pinkerton agent. Joseph McAllen has been guarding Wells, Fargo ore shipments out of Leadville when he learns his daughter has been kidnapped. Subtle clues from the perpetrators indicate she's not dead--yet--but that she will be if McAllen doesn't cooperate with a planned ore heist.
It's left to a group of friends, which includes Dancy, Red, a mysterious half-breed, and mining magnate Jeff Sharp, to save the girl from the most cold-blooded killer ever to show up in Colorado Territory. As if that isn't enough, Dancy is carrying baggage left over from his previous adventure, when a murderous woman vowed to see him dead. Could be she's going to succeed this time around. Then there's the woman he thinks he's in love with, who doesn't seem to care for him at all. It's a lot on one man's plate.
A novel of fast-paced adventure, there's gun play enough to satisfy the biggest fans of the shoot-'em-up style. But it's also a story of friendship and loyalty. I like the cast of characters eating, drinking, and staying in the finest hotels while making plans to live on cold water and hardtack and sleeping on the ground when they go into action. Once again, Best has penned a fine read.
